KS2 Athletics 2017

67 athletes from 12 schools across the Southern Area Partnership competed in the annual Sport Without Boundaries KS2 competition. The teams competed in obstacle courses, running, jumping and throwing, displaying a variety of impressive skills!

Medals were awarded to an individual from each school who showed the most determination and progress – as ever a very difficult task for teachers to decide.

Huge thanks to Carrie Reynolds from Freedom Leisure for compiling the results into her ‘magical score table’ which accounted for age, gender and ability – the results were as follows:

Gold medal: Georgian Gardens

Silver medal: River Beach

Bronze medal: St Catherine’s

New Age Kurling 2017

21 teams from schools based in the Littlehampton & Angmering area took part in the New Age Kurling event. Sports leaders from Oak Grove College and The Littlehampton Academy helped officiate the games, score and present certificates & medals. The players competed in one of 3 Round Robin matches in the first round of the event. Then, after watching a very close match between staff and sports leaders they were separated into groups for their last 2 matches.

It was a very tightly competed tournament with Lyminster clinching the gold medal by 1 point!

Well done to everyone who took part!

PRIMARY PE CONFERENCE

At the annual PE Conference for primary PE coordinators INCLUSION was as ever high on the agenda. Delegates attended a mix of both practical and network sessions. Network sessions varied from ‘The role of the PE Coordinator’ through to learning about new initiatives e.g. Quality Start within the county. The practical sessions, gym, dance, tennis, table tennis, basketball all touched on how the teacher would include all abilities and in addition there was a session specifically for inclusion with ‘seated Volleyball’ being the main sport looked at.

Will Bayley Paralympic Medallist in Table TennIs [Gold in Rio and Silver in LONDON 2012] was present throughout the day and shared a number of his inspirational stories with the delegates. He is pictured above in front of the new SWB banner!

Ali and Sandy have decided that an Inclusion Table Tennis and Seated Volleyball event are next on the SWB agenda – Watch this space.

TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES HELP RAISE AWARENESS OF INCLUSION – 10th JANUARY 2017

Nat Webb recently organised a trainer from the Youth Sport Trust to deliver a session for teachers, teaching assistants & coaches. Delegates returned to their respective schools armed with ideas on how to make PE & School Sport more accessible to all pupils. Thanks to Nat for arranging the session.

National Boccia Day success for Middleton Sports Club (MSC)

A local disability sports club is celebrating after hosting a Boccia Fest to celebrate the inaugural Boccia England National Boccia Day on Saturday 17 September at the Sea Lane club

Coinciding with the Paralympic Games in Rio, National Boccia Day champions the disability sport which aims to provide an inclusive platform for people of all ages with wide-ranging disabilities to participate in sport.

Over 12 people attended the day to either try it for the first time, or find out more about the club. “Every Monday evening we hold a Boccia club session at MSC” said Tim Hayes (club co-ordinator) “we have coaches and players available to make it fun for anyone. We are trying to make it very social and so aiming it at young adults who can not only give the game a go or practice if they want, but also have some fun in the bar afterwards”

One of the reasons people love playing is because it is so inclusive and puts everyone on a level playing field, regardless of their physical or intellectual ability. Middleton, having spent the last few years making the club far more accessible and inclusive are determined to make the club open to all no matter what their ability. “We have had inclusive cricket and tennis days throughout the summer and hope the introduction of Boccia to the sports club will encourage more and more people to join in and enjoy the clubs fantastic facilities” said Matthew

The Middleton Boccia club meets every Monday from 6pm to 8pm. For more information, contact Matthew.

Sport without boundaries – up the creek even with paddles!

‘Sport Without Boundaries’ entered a team in the Arundel Dragon Boat race which was part of the Arundel festival. None of the crew had experience so the team were in at the deep end from the start. Techniques were learnt [from the helm] and corrected [by various crew members!] in 30 seconds, the SWB team then attempted to paddle simultaneously and battle against the clock and teams competing in the event. Good fun was had by all and it is hoped that the Sport Without Boundaries logo displayed on the boat will help promote and raise the profile of the organisation.
